NORWAY

Norway does dramatic very well. Fjords plunge between towering mountains, fishing villages cling to the coast and, the further north you go, the wilder the landscape becomes.

Our Norwegian adventures have started in Tromso, high above the Arctic Circle and within the wider Lapland region, where winter means snow-covered mountains, fjords, polar nights and the possibility of the Northern Lights. It’s an Arctic city with a distinctly Norwegian character, and a brilliant base for exploring the landscapes and traditions of the far north.

But this is only the beginning. There’s a lot more of Norway on our list, from fjords and islands to colourful coastal towns and dramatic landscapes further south. We’ll keep adding the destinations, stays and experiences that we think are worth the detour as we go.

For now, start with our Tromso itinerary and Arctic guides, and come back as we continue exploring Norway.

Norway Travel Guide: Graphic map of Norway with a pin for Tromso

Tromsø is an easy way to dip your toes into the Arctic, combining a lively little city with spectacular mountains, fjords and plenty of snowy adventures.

We recommend 4–5 days, with time for the city, surrounding landscapes and at least 2 nights of Northern Lights hunting. Because the aurora has a habit of appearing precisely when you’ve decided to go to bed.

Is Tromso worth visiting?

Tromso packs a surprising amount into one Arctic city, from snowy mountains and fjords to polar nights, cosy cafés and the chance to see the Northern Lights. It’s a brilliant base for getting out into the wilderness without completely sacrificing civilisation.

But Arctic winter has its quirks, and what you wear can make the difference between magical and miserable...
